Ever since Nike Air Max first debuted in 1987, Nike has been developing Air technology with one goal in mind: to give runners the sensation of running on air. The Nike Air Vapormax is the closest Nike has ever come to this goal. Loaded with cutting-edge technology that allows for a lightweight, responsive, and flexible design, the Nike Air Vapormax represents the future of Air Max.
Behind the Design
When creating the Vapormax, the main design principle was reduction. The Vapormax throws away many traditional Air Max elements for a design that’s minimalistic and efficient.
Before the Vapormax, the Air cushioning unit was typically wrapped in foam, adding extra weight and bulk to the shoe while also separating the foot from the feel of the Air unit. The Vapormax rethinks how the Air unit is used. By creating a mold that connects directly to the air unit, there was no longer a need for foam cushioning. Instead, the foot sits directly on top of the Air units.
The Vapormax also eliminates the need for a traditional outsole by putting durable rubber in high-wear areas of the Air units, essentially combining the midsole and the outsole into one. The result is a lighter, more flexible design.
The Future of Air
After being released, the Vapormax quickly took the sneaker world by storm. Not only do sneakerheads love it for the comfortable technology, its unique design also offers a bold fashion statement. It wasn’t long before the Nike Vapormax Plus and the Nike Vapormax Flyknit 3 gave fans more ways to style the Vapormax.
